One day, during a summer holiday I was entertaining some friends with skits and jokes and a dear friend of mine told me “I think you should consider Acting”. I replied that I just loved telling stories, inspiring people and making them laugh. He insisted “Then why don’t you do it through Acting?” I didn’t pay attention to him at first. The night after, we were tipsy and playing games. We made a bet and I lost. The penalty my friend chose for me was “auditioning for a theater company”. It turned into one of the most incredible chapters of my life.
Through Theater, I found a way to speak my voice and reconnect with myself. I auditioned for a Theater company in Milan and started my acting career with them. I would work during the day and go to the theater every night for rehearsals. Although the company was small we were all very committed. There was a lot of work to do and each one of us would bring something to the table, whether it was building the stage, sourcing props or promoting the shows around Milan with flyers. I brought in my designer’s skills and created costumes for the plays. It was a wonderful time!
Being a theater actress allowed me to explore the psychology of different types of characters and gave me the opportunity to live in their shoes in many different circumstances. Every day for years I’ve practiced exercises that would improve my communication through my voice and my body language. Studying each character made me open up more and more and discover parts of myself that I didn’t know existed. I learned to be vulnerable and less judgmental, to make fun of myself, allowing my feelings and emotions be fully expressed. I was able to perceive all of the thousands of shades of colors human beings are made of and into those shades I learned that we are all so different, yet so similar. With Acting, I gained self-love, confidence, empowerment, freedom and all these attributes started reflecting in my everyday life.
My 8 years on the theater stage have been filled with countless experiences and episodes that shaped my journey and my being forever. Each one of them is a little story that deserves to be told. But before we get there, there’s so much more you should know…
’til the next one!
