Films have always been one of my greatest passions, I have watched thousands of them. There was a cinematheque in Milan at the “Spazio Oberdan” that would project old movies and organize film festivals. I’d go there 3 to 4 times a week and sometimes spend the whole day there. One day I went in the morning and watched 5 films in a row. I took part to all kinds of retrospectives, from Silent movies to contemporary ones. I felt like the character of “Toto” in the film “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso”. Films had always been my way to escape from an over-conservative family and expand my imagination beyond any physical boundaries. Back then I didn’t think that one day I’d end up in Hollywood. However, the Universe had different plans for me.
During a workshop in Rome, I met Ivana Chubbuck, who is nowadays considered to be one of the best acting coaches in the world. Ivana has trained actors such as Charlize Theron, Brad Pitt, Kate Winslet, Halle Berry and made them win Academy awards. She has a very peculiar and unique technique which uses one’s personal pain or traumas as a way to empower a goal and win, creating a cathartic experience for the actor.
When I took the workshop “The Power of the Actor” I was right in the middle of my storm and working with her changed my life. I understood how telling stories and overcoming obstacles through acting, putting myself out there was such a powerful way to heal my wounds and at the same time inspire others. I loved doing it. A few months later I decided to take a break and flew to Los Angeles to study with Ivana. Not too long after, I permanently left Italy and moved to West Hollywood.
Up and to this point, having gone through everything, my purpose still eluded me. All I knew is that I wanted to create something that could inspire people. I also knew that it had to do with my passion for Films, Fashion and Art, so I started to think of a way to bring them together and create something that could engage people.
I had some savings coming from selling my Grandma’s house in Italy. It was a good amount of money and I thought I could invest it into a business. So I launched my company. The idea behind it was to create unique fashion products and feature them into Films that with strong narrative visuals and powerful messages.
The first episode of the newborn Film adventure featured my “Coxy Bag”, a handbag that portrayed the beautiful shape of a woman’s body. I wrote a short story about a beautiful and sensual woman, confident in her body, looking at at the world through her long-limbed cat eyes, standing in her power and capable of unconditional love. I put together an incredibly talented production crew and we shot “Coxy. It’s You”. Before the genre was officially recognized, I had created my first Fashion Film.
While we were on set I felt a deep sense of achievement. I realized there was a complete way to tie in my experience with fashion, theater, acting, films and express it through a vehicle that could inspire people.
Two months after its official launch, “Coxy. It’s you” was an official selection at the Miami Fashion Film Festival, I was featured on Vogue Talents, Marie Claire, Fashion Affair magazine and a bunch of other magazines and blogs. This project led to a series of other fashion films that as well obtained international recognition and participated in several film festivals all over the world.
Has it been easy ever since? The answer is NO. I made a lot of mistakes, bad investments, trusted the wrong people, and lost an incredible amount of money. It has been a roller coaster of a journey, full of ups and downs and unexpected twists and turns. I experienced success and failure over and over again. But I started LIVING MY DREAM!
Living my dream doesn’t mean that I have reached a destination and that everything in my life became perfect. Perfection is a man made word and doesn’t exist, what matters to me is the journey. Living my dream to me means waking up every day and knowing that I am living with passion, following my heart, being truthful to myself, taking action and doing whatever it takes to overcome all the obstacles that come along the way. It means facing the world day by day, recognizing its bright and dark sides embracing who I am and inspiring people to do the same.
I hope that reading this blog and the stories that will follow, will inspire you to live your own Dream.
’Til the next one!
